They provided an unforgettable concert for our opening night. The audience loved Haydn’s wonderful “Joke” quartet, but it got even better: most of us had not heard Lawrence Dillon’s “Infinite Sphere” (his String Quartet No. 4, commissioned by the Daedalus) and were completely dazzled by the brilliant writing and virtuosic performance. The closing piece was also new to many of us: Dvorak’s Opus 105, the last quartet he composed — much more “Czech” than “American” and a rich and jubilant finale for the concert — greeted with cheers and an immediate standing ovation.

Audience members who attended the post-concert reception enjoyed visiting with the artists as the Quartet relaxed for a few moments before their early-morning flight back to New York.

The Daedalus Quartet has established itself as a leader among the new generation of string ensembles. In the ten years of their existence they have been lauded by critics and audiences alike for their technical finish, interpretive unity, and the sheer gusto of their performances.
